Fritz Bayerlein (1899 – 1970 ) was a lt general who was chief of staff of Panzer forces in the Afrika Korps.After the German defeat in Africa, he served on the Eastern Front and during the Ardennes Offensive.In Feb 1945, he was in command of LIII Army Corps and took part in the last desperate battles.. Bayerlein was the first senior general to surrender his men to US forces in an effort to prevent senseless sacrifice.
