Lt Gen Simon B. Buckner Jr., USMC (foreground, holding camera) was the only US general rank officer to be KIA during WW2. He led the Marines during Okinawa and was killed on June 18, 1945 when spotted by Japanese artillery observers visiting a forward observation post. He was posthumously promoted to full four star general.
