“Much remains to be done. The victory won in the West must now be won in the East.” Men of the US Armys 77th Infantry Division listen to news of Germanys unconditional surrender behind the lines on Okinawa, 8 May 1945. Despite the end of the fighting in Europe, the war is far from over and these men, only minutes after hearing of VE Day, were back to fighting in the rain and mud. There were no celebrations for them on Okinawa.
