In the Middle East, Egyptian activist Huda Shaarawi (1879 – 1947) has become a legendary figure. In the early 1920s she was a leader in Egypt’s fight for political independence. Turning her attention toward feminism, Shaarawi led the struggle for women’s rights in the Middle East, focusing on education, voting rights, and marriage laws.
