At 5’8″ General George B. McClellan responded to his troops’ affectionate nickname “Little Mac.” 152 years ago today, on July 11, 1861, he led Union forces at the Battle of Rich Mountain in West Virginia. Confederate troops were forced to split in two, and half surrendered, a victory that boded well for McClellan’s reputation. Soon he took command of the Army of the Potomac. (Ca. 1860 – 1865. War Department. Office of the Chief Signal Officer.)
