By dusk on D-day the first American dead were covered with shrouds and burled temporarily in the shallow graves on the beach. The job was done by mostly black medical orderlies who worked through persistent German artillery fire. A total of 2,500 Allied servicemen died in the assault – a blessed quarter of the number predicted.
