General Maxwell Taylor. As commander of the famous 101st Airborne Division, he was the first allied general to land in France on D-Day. He and his men jumped during the night behind enemy lines. Though a fine leader, he missed his division’s toughest hour: the German siege of Bastogne, during the Battle of the Ardennes (January 1945). He had been summoned to a meeting in the US. In 1957 he commanded the troops that intervened in Little Rock (Arkansas) to enforce school desegregation.
