Filipino Officer & American Troops On Panay Seizing another strategic island in the Philippine campaign – and in a sense avenging the Jap sinking of the gunboat USS Panay in China on December 10th, 1937 – US forces smash ashore on the island of Panay in the Philippines on March 18th 1945. Within 60 hours – thanks to the effective preparatory activities of the Philippine fighters – all Jap resistance was crushed.
