1/15/43: The Pentagon in Virginia. World’s largest building by floor area. The building was required to use a minimal amount of steel, hence the sprawl vs. building skyward. Ground was broken on September 11, 1941. The building has 2x the standard amount of bathrooms because it was built to accommodate Virginia’s racial segregation. Roosevelt ordered the end of racial discrimination in the US military in June 1941 and ordered the removal of “Whites Only” signs pre-dedication.
