A Red Army crew is firing a heavy 82mm mortar into German positions in Stalingrad, Oct 21, 1942. The complete ruining of the city by German artillery and aerial bombardment ironically helped the Reds: by piling up so much debris, the Germans succeeded in offering the Russians a battleground impenetrable to armor and perfect for block-by-block, WW1-style infantry fighting, the kind of struggle the Germans could not win in view of Russian superiority in both weapons and numbers.
