‘They were just 11 black soldiers” On Sunday Dec. 17, 1944, allied forces began to withdrawl from Bastogne after being overrun by the Germans. Battery C, a contingent of African-American soldiers remained behind to allow the rest of the force to escape. After fighting valiantly and seeing the majority of their compatriots killed, these 11 men sought shelter in the home of the town’s mayor; only to be discovered within an hour, dragged into the streets and executed.
