Pierre Caliste Landry (19 April 1841-22 December 1921), a former slave, was elected Mayor of Donaldsonville in 1868, he became the first African American mayor in the United States. He is also credited with the founding of St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Donaldsonville. Landry went on to win election to both the Louisiana House of Representatives and the Louisiana State Senate.
