While quite a few African-Americans served in combat roles during the Civil War, the vast majority were relegated to mundane tasks such as teamsters, cooks and servants. This 17year old Confederate Officer is attended by his man-servant who is not much older. He is reputed to have saved his master’s life shortly before this image was taken.
