Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn (top left in the photo) was the first documented public figure photographed “giving the finger.” He did so in the 1886 photo of the Boston Beaneaters (he was their pitcher) and their rivals, the New York Giants. [Follow website link for larger detail photograph.]
