Col General Lothar Rendulic, an Austrian of Croatian origin, was one of only 3 Austrians to reach the rank of colonel general in the Wermacht. He served throughout the war as divisional and army group commander and fought one of the last large-scale desperate battles of the Nazi regime trying to stem the Soviet East Prussian Offensive in late 1944-early 1945. Rendulic was imprisoned after the war but after his sentence was reduced he was freed in 1951. He died in 1971.
