Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 – on October 22nd, after accusing the USSR of installing nuclear missiles in Cuba, Kennedy ordered a blockade of the island. When the Soviet ambassador to the UN refused to deny the charge, US ambassador Adlai Stevenson showed him photos of missile sites and the Soviets backed down.
