While on leave from the Marines in 1942, Miguel H. Trujillo, far right, poses with his mother-in-law Mary S. Paisano, Pedro Sarracino and Trujillo’s daughter Josephine. Trujillo, an Isleta Pueblo native living and teaching at Laguna Pueblo, was refused the right to vote in New Mexico in 1948 even though he had just served in the U.S. military during World War II. He sued in federal court and won a precedent-setting judgement that granted Indians the right to vote in New Mexico.
