1880s Portrait of King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway. One of the most successful Scandinavian kings, he was seriously lacking in royal ancestry. Only through his grandmother, Princess Augusta of Bavaria, was he truly royal. His other ancestors included some French aristocrats as well as French commoners. This mixed ancestry certainly did not make him less of a king.
