Billy Bowlegs became a primary leader of his people during the 2nd Seminole War 1835-1842. He was able to withstand efforts to force his people to move from Florida to Indian Territory now Oklahoma. After the 3rd Seminole War 1855-1858, he finally agreed to take his people to the Indian Territory. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he spent his last years as a captain in the Union Army’s 1st Indian Regiment.
