When they weren’t fighting the enemy in New Guinea, the Allies fought the terrain. The troopers at left pierced wood and wire together to cross the Kumusi River. Their destination was Buna, site of a gruesome campaign to drive the Japanese from pillboxes made of coconut logs and sand-filled oil drums.
