Chief Mad Bear was looked upon as a kind and wise individual. As a young man he had been a member of the Fool Soldier Band. This band had rescued some white people who had been taken prisoners in the Minnesota uprising in 1862. Mad Bear died in 1915 and is buried at Wakpala, South Dakota.
