Staff Sergeant Sniper Ivan Merkulov (foreground) deploys alongside two other snipers sometime in 1943. In March 1944, Merkulov was decorated as Hero of the Soviet Union after having a personal record of 144 confirmed kills. Note Merkulov’s advanced camo smock that was not widely available.
