Nadezhda Popova, right, and her co-pilot Katya Ryabova were members of the legendary 46th Night Bombing Regiment for the U.S.S.R. during World War II. Composed only of women, the group was known unofficially as “Stalin’s Falcons.” But the Germans had a different name for the women in their bomb-laden bi-planes: Night Witches. Lt. Col. Nadezhda Popova, who was named a Hero of the Soviet Union, passed away on July 8, 2013 at the age of 91.
