Survivors and American soldiers watch as former SS guards are forced to crawl along the ground at the Mauthausen concentration camp. Looking at this picture from the comfortable distance of 70 years, it may seem a petty degradation to make the guards crawl like this. Yet, in the direct aftermath of torment and debasement, the human instinct for retribution is strong. The first bond broken for the liberated was to see their tormenters reduced to harmless, pitiful captives.
