Lt. Robert J. “Bob” Dole, U.S. Army 1942-48. 10th Mountain Div., WW II. On April 14, 1945, 21 year old Army Lt. Dole was severely injured while fighting World War II Germans in the Appernine Mountains in Italy. Suffering on the battlefield for nine hours, Dole was later evacuated to receive care. After an arduous recovery, Dole received two Bronze Stars with Valor and two Purple Heart awards. He would never regain use of his right arm. U.S. Senator (R-KS) 1969-96.
