Gen. Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, who earned his nickname for his unwavering resolve at the First Battle of Bull Run. Off the battlefield, Jackson was a natural teacher. He taught himself to read and became a professor at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) after the war.
