Luigi Ferri is the son of Julio Ferri, a member of the Italian Parliament, and Lina Coppe Ferri, of Fiume. He was arrested by Italian police in Trieste in May 1944 during a visit to his Jewish (maternal) grandmother. After his arrest, the child was imprisoned briefly in the San Sabba transit camp and then deported to Auschwitz in August. He survived with the help of an Austrian Jewish physician.
