11 in SMS Rheinland was one of four Nassau class battleships built as a response to the revolutionary ‘big gun’ HMS Dreadnought: they retained reciprocating engines rather than turbines and their six turrets were inefficiently laid out. At Jutland in 1916 they were at the rear of Scheer’s battle line but played an unexpectedly prominent part after his two 180 degree ‘battle turn always’.
