In the fall of 1942, women began ferrying fighter planes from Montana to Alaska after the United States and the Soviet Union signed a lend-lease agreement that made Ladd Field in Fairbanks a vital link in a secret mission to get American-made aircraft to the Russian front to fight the Nazis. Fairbanks became the official aircraft transfer point between the two nations.
