First incendiary bombing raid against Tokyo, March 10, 1945: B-29 Superfortress “Pride of the Yankees,882 Squadron, 500th Bomber Group, 20th Air Force, has landed after having to fly almost 700 miles on only two engines to land in Iwojima. The raid killed 100,000 civilians, destroyed 250,000 buildings, and incinerated 16 square miles of the city. Aircrews at the tail end of the bomber stream reported that the stench of burned human flesh permeated the aircraft over the target.
