This is Sigmund Sobolewski. He was the 88th prisoner to enter into Auschwitz. Born to a Catholic family in Poland, Sobolewski was an officer in the Polish Army when Germany invaded the country. He would survive the initial invasion only to be arrested for his father’s anti-Nazi activities. Only 17 years old when he arrived at Auschwitz on the very first transport to the fledgling camp in June of 1940, he would spend the next four and a half years there, until the camp’s liberation in January 45.
