Doug Mason posing with rifle. Private Doug Mason of Tonbridge, Kent, volunteered to go down from Castle Hill, Cassino, to pick up wounded men. In accordance with the Geneva Convention, he was unarmed. On the way down, he met 6 German paratroopers, all armed with grenades, pistols, and Spandaus. Realizing his only chance was to bluff, he violently ordered the Germans to follow him back to the Castle. To his surprise and relief, the Germans obeyed, and he led them back into captivity.
