Jack, three years old Belgian Shepherd, was carrying a message back from the company on a road block when he was wounded in the back by a Japanese sniper on Bougainville. However, he carried the message through. For the heroic act, he has been commended by the commandant of the Marine Corps for “outstanding performance against the enemy” while in the line of duty. The dog is shown here with one of his handlers, Private First Class Finley.
