A platoon of African American GIs advances cautiously in search of a German sniper nearby. Photo was shot in Vierville-sur-Me, France on June 10, 1944 — four days after the Normandy landings. Sergeant on the left carries the M1A carbine. The lieutenant (helmet with white marking) prefers his Colt 1911 pistol. The rest of the platoon appear to carry the Sprinfield M1903 rifle.
