August von Mackensen (1849-1944) Field Marshal and field commander, his operations were noted for speed and surprise. He was a corps commander at Tannenberg; commanded the Ninth Army in Poland; captured Lodz in Dec. 1914. May 1915, he commanded the Eleventh Army; spearheaded the Gorlice-Tarnow offensive in Galicia. In 1916, he commanded the Central Powers invasion of Serbia; led the multinational Danube Army during the successful 1916 Romanian Campaign.
