WW1: One of France’s colonial troops is KIA sitting upright in what looks like a bomb crater on the Western Front, undated. During WW1 the French Army conscripted some 440,000 colonial troops from Africa and French Indochina. An estimated 40,000 of these troops gave their lives for “their” country.
