WW1: A German fighter has met an inglorious ending. Air warfare in WW1 was disproprtionally deadly for pilots because the warplanes of the time had low survivability. Made of wood, paper and wire in the early days, and of thin sheet metal toward the end, a WW1 plane was a fire trap and could be brought down with rifle fire — all of these factors contributing to an undignified death for the pilot.
