Brigadier Waffen-SS Kurt Meyer was the recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Upon promotion on 16 June 1944 at the age of 33 years, Meyer, man popular with the troops, became one of the youngest divisional commanders in the German Army during the Second World War. After 1945, he was imprisoned for 10 years and released in 1955. In poor health, he died in 1961, his funeral attended by 15,000, mostly old Waffen SS
