Japanese Nurse dressed in Black 1905. Red Cross Nurses were a symbol of modernity and of Japan’s commitment to humanitarian ideals, during the Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 5 September 1905). Postcards reflected this by updating the age old tradition of Bijin-e (pictures of beautiful women). This postcard is from the “Thousand Contemporary Figures” series. S)
