Edward “Butch” O’Hare, who was raised in Chicago, became an early war hero in 1942, when he single-handedly shot down five Japanese planes. O’Hare, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his feat, was killed in 1943. The city later renamed the airport in his honor.
