Anna Magdalena Box, African American & Native American descent born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, in 1870. Her grandmother came to the Territory on the Trail of Tears. In 1876, Neal accompanied her parents and other Cherokee Freedpeople to Tucson, Arizona Territory. Annie was enrolled in St. Joseph’s Academy next to San Augustine’s Mission for Indians while her parents supported themselves through gambling and mining investments.
