Grandma Moses had worked for years as a family farmer, married, and given birth to 10 children before she ever lifted a brush to paint a scene. When she was in her 70s, after arthritis made it difficult for her to continue her embroidery, Moses turned to painting. Today, Grandma Moses is remembered as the foremost American primitive painter of the 20th century.
