German’s bomb Belfast. Sheila the elephant retreats to Denise’s house! Today in WW2 history 4/15/41. A heavy German air raid by 200 Luftwaffe bombers hit the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Belfast resident Denise Austin (a zookeeper) kept Sheila the elephant, a 5ft tall calf, safe in her walled courtyard for several months during the Blitz.
