Trudy Ederle (left), the first woman to swim the English Channel, with her sister. Trudy was born in New York City in 1905. She 1st attempted to swim the English Channel in 1925, but was disqualified when she was taken out of the water b/c her coach thought she was in peril. Her second swim was successful and she became the 1st woman to swim the Channel in 1926. At this point, 5 men had completed the swim. The fastest swam it in 16hrs & 33mins, she beat his time with 14hrs & 39mins.
