Ota Benga had been freed from slave traders in the Congo by an American missionary. He was found with his teeth all filed into sharpened fangs. He ended up being “exhibited” in the Bronx Zoo’s Monkey House. When the World War I broke out, a return to the Congo became impossible, and Benga became depressed as his hopes for a return faded.
