Thomas Custer (1845 -1876) Awarded two Medals of Honor for bravery in Civil War. The first soldier to receive the dual honor, and one of just 19 in history. Younger brother of George Armstrong Custer, he perished with him at Little Bighorn in 1876. He enlisted in the Union Army at age 16. He served as a private early in the Civil War and was mustered out in 1864 as a corporal. Distinguished himself by winning brevets of captain, major, and lieutenant colonel, though barely 20 at war’s end.
