Following World War I, Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act, 1924 which gave First Americans citizenship with the Right to Vote. Many western states, however, refused to allow them to vote and used tactics like poll taxes, reading requirements, and even hiding the polling places, to prevent them from voting.
