Norwegian SS volunteer Johan-Petter Balstad was an officer candidate in the Norge Regiment’s 7th Company of the Nordland Division during the ‘Battle of the European SS’ at Narva in 1944. He became an expert at destroying Soviet T-34 tanks with the hand-held Panzerfaust, hence his three tank killer badges on his right upper arm in this photo. He survived the war and passed away in Oslo in 1985, age 61.
