Cossack volunteer in the German army. Many Soviet Kuban Cossacks chose to switch to the German side either when in POW camps or on active service in the Soviet Army.Most volunteers joined up after the Germans reached the Cossack homelands in the summer of 1942. The two main Cossack units, 1.Cossack Division and 2.Cossack Cavalry Division participated in operations next to the Waffen SS. After the war, the Cossacks who surrendered to the Allies were returned to the USSR and many of them perished.
