As photographed by the legendary Margaret Bourke-White, an exhausted US infantryman sits in an aid station, hunched over and sleeping. The soldier had been out in a night raid behind enemy lines somewhere along the Italian front in the Appennine Mountains where German forces still resisted, April 1945.
